Its my niece's birthday soon and this is my gift for her! shes turning one.

:icongimmefeedback:

I want to know what you think of the colors design(aka layout) and how effective I was at portraying her personality. Would love comments from fellow vector artists for pen tips or what not!

well, I play around with vector- but only do cartoon work, so I hope my insight can help.

First- i'll state the obvious ( if it isn't already) wow- simply amazed at what a more realistic vector artwork can get- totally blown away by that BIG time.

What I think looks the best- the clothes- especially that hoody- not just the pattern on it- but you get the feel of it being heavier then the shirt.  The folds in the pants and the shading is handled great.

The color choices def. scream baby colors!

The layout- while you didn't cut any toes out- I feel the bottom is cropped rather close- give some more breathing space.  I agree with a poster that the composition is a little weak.  As for suggestions on how to fix it- I would try having a more horizontal canvas and having the baby more on the right side with more canvas showing on the left ( as in when I am looking at the pic left)

What also may be contributing to this, IMHO- the lack of a bg.  You have such a detailed piece, but the bg is just a solid color. I suck at backgrounds and don't do realistic vectors like this- but I can do some suggestions- if you wanted it simple- perhaps try a flat color- but use a gradient? Or find a way to add a hint of a BG with vector art.  Another option is to have more of a patterned bg- but when I do this, I use photoshop- but I usually photomanip a BG so that its mainly a color with some texture behind it- its simple so it doesn't distract from the character ( your case, the baby) but gives something to the piece.  For this one- maybe play around with a cloudy sky? I don't know how well it would work- it's something I just play around with- sometimes its like- great! looks perfect.  Sometimes it's like ehhhh- looks like crap.

Now, the comment about how wet her mouth looks ( which looks great) but how it looks to the rest of the face- see, the detail of that mouth is so good- that I feel it makes the rest of th efface look underworked a bit. As the other commenter said- try using that detail in the eyes.

You definatly captured her being very happy being on that swing!

Overall, I really like this image!  It blows me away to see such a realistic vector!  You have great use of the program and I am sure your niece ( and her parents) will love it!
